Common Issues

Fido can develop many of the same conditions as we can, including gum disease, abscesses, infections, and misalignments. It’s also not uncommon for our canine pals to crack or break their teeth. (Given Fido’s affinity for carrying sticks, this really isn’t surprising.) We also sometimes see congenital issues. For instance, overcrowding is quite common in small dogs. Home Care

Doggy dental care doesn’t have to be difficult or time consuming. Brushing is the best option. You’ll need to get Fido acclimated to this process. Start slow, and gradually incorporate pet toothpaste and a doggy toothbrush. Even working a quick one-minute sessions into your furry friend’s daily care regime will be beneficial. There are also plenty of doggy dental products on the market, such as treats, chews, oral rinses, and dental flakes. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Warning Signs

 Fido can’t tell you if his teeth hurt, but he will give off some clues. Some common ones include swelling, tartar buildup, bleeding gums, and heavy drool. Bad breath can also be an indication of doggy dental woes. Man’s Best Friend has never been known to have minty-fresh breath, but his breath shouldn’t make you turn green, either. Dental issues can also lead to behavioral changes, such as crankiness, withdrawal, and reduced interest in play. Changes in eating habits are another red flag. It’s important to note that many of these things can be caused by several different health issues. Contact your vet right away if you notice any of them.

Exams

We recommend having your canine buddy’s choppers checked every year. You’ll also need to make an appointment if you know or suspect your pooch has dental issues. There are treatment options available. These may range from simple cleanings to extractions. The main thing is to have Fido properly diagnosed.
