Cats are very clean, which is one of the many things we love about them. Fluffy will groom herself daily, and she’ll use a litterbox to do her business. While setting up your kitty’s personal powder room isn’t exactly rocket science, there are a few things to keep in mind. A York, PA vet offers some advice on litterbox setup and maintenance in this article.

More Than Enough

If you have more than one cat, you should have more than one litterbox. As a rule of thumb, go for one litterbox per kitty, with at least one extra.

Consider Age

For most furballs, any litterbox will work. However, if you have a kitten, you can get Fluffy a little junior box. Avoid clay or clumping litters with baby cats. This is due to the risk of accidental ingestion, which can cause life threatening complications. For seniors, choose boxes with low sides. These will be easier for your feline pal to get in and out of.

Hide It

Do you have a small space? With a bit of creative flair, you can keep your furry friend’s powder room tucked out of sight. One option is to use a piece of custom furniture designed specifically for this. These are relatively inexpensive, but are both attractive and durable. You can also do this yourself. Get a used trunk, dresser, or end table, and cut a hole in one side. Use the existing door or lid for cleaning access. Another thing you can do is set up a folding screen.

Location

Choosing the right spot is also important. Pick a place that is easy for Fluffy to get to, and offers her a bit of privacy. Try not to have the box in direct sunlight. Drafty areas aren’t a good bet, either. If you choose a spare bathroom, keep the fan running in that room. The air flow will help with the smell.

Read Reviews

You can probably skip this one if you’re going for a basic box. However, if you’re considering going high-tech with a self-cleaning version, it definitely pays to do some market research.

Keep It Clean

Kitties like their powder rooms nice and clean, and who can blame them? We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter about once a week.
